Idolkritik

Exempel nr 1:

Addison: "There is something so wild and yet so solemn in the speeches of his [Shakespeares] ghosts, fairies, witches, and the like imaginary persons, that we cannot forbear thinking them natural, though we have no rule by which to judge them, and must confess, if there are (NOT HÄR) such beings in the world, it looks highly probable they should talk and act as he has represented them."

Mr. Hurds hjälpsamma fotnot: "There are. He might have said be instead of are, and he would have said it, but that, as the accent would fall on be, the jingle of be in beings, which follows, would have had a worse effect than there are. I only mention this to show the delicacy of his ear..."

Exempel nr. 2:

Addison: "The last are, indeed, more preferable, (NOT HÄR) because they are founded on some new knowledge or improvement..."

Mr. Hurd: "The degree of comparison is expressed in the adjective itself. The comparative, more, is then to be struck out, as a manifest blunder of the compositor. It is impossible that such an expression should come from Mr. Addison."
